This blog post will be purely about my experiences of my first year studying photography at Bath Spa University. I feel this is not space where I could talk about moving to Bath or the whole University agenda. Going to the two opens days, I learnt that the first unit I would be set was 35mm, I was really excited to do this project as I haven’t got much experience within that medium. the project itself was very successful, however (much like in all the other art I create) I am never truly happy once I reflect back on it.

Unit two was difficult for me, I had never gone up to strangers to ask if I could take their photos, and because I wanted them at work, it was even harder. A lot of people said no, and I have heard that other photographers can see that as a challenge, however I do not. I don’t want to invade someone’s space and forcefully make them pose for a photograph.

Unit three was my weakest project of first year. I have no interest in fashion, I wear band merchandise because they are comfortable, and they support the bands I love. My main inspiration for this unit was the clothes I wear, I used models who would normally wear the same style of clothing and went to locations that suited the theme. It was interesting to learn about how professionals manage their models, lighting, makeup and location.

My most personal unit was project four; landscape. I had shoot a lot during the day with my previous landscape photography, so I wanted to challenge myself and produce a body of work that was all taken at night. My lack of sleep and the mind-set that I was in helped me produce a series of images that are very special to me. My main inspiration came from the second album “Where I Go When I Am Sleeping” by Casey. Their music means a lot to me and I wanted to produce something that reminded me of them, I am proud to say I have.

Overall, my first year of university has been and amazing experience. As well as learning from all my tutors, I have gained so much experience shooting live events, and I’m proud of myself for achieving that on my own. I do not think I am anywhere close to going on tour, but I would like to shoot a festival over the summer as that is the next big thing on my list.
